Estudo britânico comparou cinco mil pares de gémeos
Um estudo realizado na University College of London sugere que a obesidade infantil se deve mais à carga genética do que ao estilo de vida. A análise, publicada na revista especializada "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition", comparou cinco mil pares de gémeos idênticos e não idênticos e descobriu que 77 por cento das diferenças entre os seus índices de massa corporal e perímetro abdominal eram determinadas pelos genes.
Os investigadores referem que o estudo de gémeos é uma boa forma de testar como a carga genética interfere no desenvolvimento e saúde das pessoas. Segundo a BBC, os gémeos idênticos têm exactamente os mesmos genes, mas os não idênticos partilham metade da carga genética. Além disso, como nascem ao mesmo tempo e crescem no mesmo ambiente, os gémeos tenderão a ter os mesmos hábitos alimentares.
Este estudo concluiu que o efeito do meio ondew cresciam tinha menos peso do que a carga genética herdada. «Contrariamente ao que se acredita, de que o ambiente familiar é o principal factor a determinar o excesso de peso, este estudo demonstra que não é bem assim», disse Jane Wardle, líder da pesquisa, à Reuters.
«Estes resultados não significam que as crianças com uma genética propensa à obesidade venham a ser obesas, mas a a sua herança genética dá-lhes uma grande probabilidade». A obesidade afecta 400 milhões de pessoas em todo o mundo, segundo a Organização Mundial de Saúde.
